Updated Travel-Ready Tips
Antalya Car Rental Guide: Locations, Navigation, and What to Watch For
Renting a car in Antalya is one of the most convenient ways to explore the Turkish Riviera beyond the city—think day trips to Termessos, Perge, Aspendos, Side, Olympos, and the mountain roads toward Saklıkent. Public transit works within Antalya, but reaching beaches, ruins, viewpoints, and small towns is significantly easier (and often faster) with your own car. The trade-offs are city traffic during peak hours, paid parking near beaches and Old Town, and the need to understand insurance, fuel rules, deposits, and potential add-on fees. For most travelers, an economy car is sufficient for coastal routes; consider a higher-clearance vehicle only if you plan remote rural roads. Automatic cars can cost more and book out early in summer, so reserve ahead if you need one.

Antalya Airport (AYT) — International & Domestic Terminals
Most visitors pick up here. Follow signs for “Car Rental/Rent a Car” inside the terminal; desks are typically in the arrivals area. Some providers may require a short walk or shuttle to an off-airport lot. Before leaving, confirm fuel policy (full-to-full is simplest), inspect the car with photos/video, and ask how to reach the main roads toward Antalya city center, Lara, Belek, or Kemer. Pros: widest selection, long hours, easy highway access. Cons: airport surcharges, peak-season queues, and higher demand pricing.
Kaleiçi (Old Town) / Marina Area
Convenient if you’re staying in boutique hotels in the historic center. Pros: walkable pickup/return near accommodations, good for later start after a city stay. Cons: narrow streets, limited parking, one-way lanes, and potential access restrictions; returning a car can be slower during busy evenings.
Konyaaltı Beach Area
Popular with beachfront stays and quick access to coastal drives. Pros: easier road access than Old Town, simpler parking than Kaleiçi in many spots. Cons: seasonal congestion near the beach, paid parking zones, and limited inventory compared with the airport.

Antalya Car Rental Guide

Essential driving tips and car rental FAQs for exploring Antalya, Turkey

Can I drive in Turkey with my US license, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required alongside your US license in Turkey. The IDP must be obtained before departure from AAA or AATA in the US (cost: ~$20). Some rental agencies may accept US license alone, but you'll face heavy fines (500-1,000 TRY) if stopped by police without it. Apply for your IDP at least 2 weeks before travel—processing takes 6-8 business days.
How do I pay for highway tolls in Turkey? Do rental cars have an OGS/KGS device?
Turkey uses two electronic toll systems: OGS and KGS. Most rental cars come with a OGS device pre-installed—you'll receive a toll card at pickup with a refundable deposit (≈200 TRY). Charges are billed to your rental agreement. If your car lacks a device, you must stop at toll booths and pay cash (credit cards accepted at most). Highway tolls from Antalya to Alanya run about 85-100 TRY.
What's the minimum age to rent a car in Antalya, and how much is the young driver surcharge?
Minimum age is typically 21 years old, but most agencies require drivers under 25 to pay a young driver surcharge of 50-100 TRY per day. Some premium agencies (Avis, Hertz) set minimum age at 23. You'll need a credit card in the driver's name for the pre-authorization hold (usually 1,500-3,000 TRY). Drivers over 70 may face restrictions—check directly with agencies.
What type of fuel do cars in Turkey use, and is it easy to find gas stations?
Turkish gas stations offer unleaded gasoline (benzin 95/98) and diesel (motorin). Gas stations are abundant on highways and in cities, but sparse in rural areas—fill up before mountain drives. Prices run roughly 40-45 TRY per liter. Most rentals use gasoline. Return the car with the same fuel level to avoid refueling charges (often at 30% higher pump rates).
Are there any dangerous driving conditions I should prepare for in the Antalya region?
Summer heat (35-45°C) can cause tire blowouts—check tire pressure before long drives. Winter brings fog and occasional ice on mountain roads near Termessos and Saklikent. Coastal highways have sharp turns with minimal guardrails—drive cautiously at night. Wildlife (especially goats) on rural roads increases collision risk. Always carry water in summer and keep emergency numbers saved: 112 for emergencies, 155 for police.
