Pohutu Geyser – the largest geyser in New Zealand

Pōhutu Geyser is a geyser in the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, Rotorua, in the North Island of New Zealand. Pohutu means “big splash” or “explosion”.  The main geyser of the area, and the largest in New Zealand, it spurts up to twenty times per day and can reach heights of up to 30 metres (100 feet).

You will encounter bubbling mud, pools of boiling water still used for cooking, and stunning geysers. The Pōhutu geyser is the star of the show. As well as being a spectacular sight, Pōhutu is the most reliable geyser on Earth. Eruptions can last from a few minutes to much longer. About 15 years ago, Pōhutu erupted for over 250 days.

It is possible to reach Pohutu Geyser in the Whakarewarewa geothermal park.
