Car Rental Planning Tips For Driving Around Yerevan
Bring The Right Documents: Carry your passport, a valid driver’s license, and your rental agreement at all times. If your license is not in Latin characters, confirm whether an International Driving Permit is required by your rental company.
Plan Fuel Stops Outside The City: In remote areas, fuel stations can be spaced out. Top up before heading south toward Vayots Dzor (Areni/Noravank) or into mountain regions, and keep cash as a backup in case card terminals are offline.
Watch Mountain Weather And Road Conditions: Routes to higher elevations (Amberd/Aragats, parts of Dilijan and Tsaghkadzor) can have fog, snow, or ice in colder months. Check forecasts and allow extra time for slower driving.
Choose Sensible Insurance Coverage: Consider adding CDW/TP and glass/tire coverage if you plan to drive beyond Yerevan, where gravel shoulders and occasional potholes are more common. Photograph the car at pickup and drop-off.
Avoid Rush Hours In Yerevan: City traffic is typically busiest during weekday commute times. Start early for popular day trips like Garni–Geghard or Lake Sevan to reduce time in congestion and to secure parking.
Use Offline Maps And Local Place Names: Download offline maps before you leave the city and search using both English and Armenian spellings where possible (for example, Sevan/Սևան). This helps when mobile coverage drops in canyons and mountain roads.
