Manila Car Rental Guide: Where to Pick Up and What to Expect
Renting a car in Manila can be a smart choice if you plan day trips outside Metro Manila (Tagaytay, Batangas, Pampanga, or Laguna) or need point-to-point flexibility that ride-hailing can’t always guarantee during peak demand. The tradeoffs are real: traffic congestion, limited parking in dense districts, and toll systems that often require RFID (or cash lanes where available). For many travelers, the best approach is to pick up a car only for the days you’ll actually drive out of the city, then rely on ride-hailing or public transport within the central business districts.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) – Terminals 1–4
Manila’s main airport area offers the most convenient start after landing, with the widest selection of vehicle classes and longer operating hours. Expect pickups to be at an airport desk, a nearby parking area, or via meet-and-greet instructions provided after confirmation. Pros: maximum inventory, late arrivals support, easy for luggage. Cons: potentially higher day-one rates, heavier traffic leaving the airport, and stricter pickup timing/document checks.
Makati Central Business District (Ayala Center Area)
Pros: central location for business travelers, strong access to EDSA/SLEX connections, plenty of hotels. Cons: tight parking in some areas, heavy rush-hour congestion, and one-way streets that make navigation slower.
Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig
Pros: more organized road layout than older districts, good parking availability at malls/offices, convenient for upscale stays. Cons: peak-hour bottlenecks at entry/exit points, and rentals may require coordination for pickup in specific buildings/parking structures.

Manila Car Rental & Driving Guide

Essential driving tips and FAQ for renting a car and exploring Manila and beyond

Can I drive in the Philippines with my US driver's license, or do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
US tourists can rent a car with just their valid US driver's license, but an IDP is STRONGLY recommended. While police rarely check it, an IDP serves as a translated backup if any dispute arises. Get one from AAA before your trip (cost: ~$20). Some rental companies may hold a passport and credit card as additional ID. Minimum driver age is typically 21-25 depending on the rental company.
Is it worth driving in Manila itself, or should I just use it as a base for day trips?
Unless you're comfortable with aggressive driving and gridlock traffic, AVOID driving IN Manila proper. Traffic高峰期 (rush hour: 7-10am, 5-9pm) can turn a 30-minute drive into 2+ hours.EDSA, the main环形公路 (circumferential road), is infamous for daily gridlock. Use Manila as your base and rent a car for OUTBOUND trips to Tagaytay, Pampanga, or Batangas. Tagaytay (60km, ~2hrs in bad traffic) offers scenic Taal Volcano views.
How do I pay for toll roads, and is the RFID system worth getting?
Major expressways (NLEX, SLEX, CAVITEX) use RFID payment—load awart (eload) or cash at toll booths. If you're renting for multiple trips, buy an EasyTrip RFID at贸 (711/similar) for ~₱500 (~$9) deposit. Without RFID, expect long cash queue lines. Toll costs: Manila to Clark (~100km) costs ~₱300-400 (~$5-7). Fill up on gas BEFORE entering toll roads—it's cheaper outside.
What's the real cost of gas, and what type do I need?
unleaded gasoline (Ron 95-98) is the standard. Prices fluctuate but expect ₱55-70/liter (~$1-1.25). Diesel is cheaper at ₱50-60/liter. Most rentals run on gasoline—confirm before refueling. Full-to-full policy is standard; get the car with a full tank and return it full to avoid markup fees. Gas stations are plentiful along major highways but can be sparse in rural areas—always top up when you see a station.
Should I buy full insurance coverage, or is the basic rental insurance enough?
Basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is usually included, but it often has a high deductible (₱30,000-50,000 / ~$530-890). For peace of mind, buy FULL coverage (typically ₱500-800/day extra, ~$9-14) which waives the deductible. Given chaotic traffic, frequent minor collisions, and opportunistic vehicle damage reporting, full coverage is MANDATORY for first-time Philippines drivers. Check if your US credit card provides secondary rental coverage—many Visa Infinite and Amex cards do, but you'll still be liable for the deductible initially.
What are the most dangerous driving conditions I should prepare for?
Three major hazards: (1) TYPOON SEASON (June-November)—check weather forecasts DAILY; some roads flood waist-deep. (2) NIGHT DRIVING on provincial roads—unlit vehicles, pedestrians, and motorcyclists without lights are common. (3) RAIN—hydroplaning risk on highways, visibility drops to near zero in heavy storms. Drive defensively, use headlights, and if typhoon warnings are issued, postpone non-essential trips. AAA (Automotive Association of the Philippines) emergency: 0917-834-3333.
