Cairo Car Rental Guide: Where To Pick Up And What To Expect
Renting a car in Cairo can be convenient if you’re planning day trips beyond the city (Giza, Saqqara, Fayoum, Alexandria, or the Red Sea via flights and onward driving) or if you prefer door-to-door flexibility over ride-hailing during peak times. Inside central Cairo, traffic congestion, limited parking, aggressive lane changes, and frequent double-parking can make driving stressful—many travelers use a rental mainly for airport transfers and out-of-town travel. Before you book, confirm your required license documents, the deposit/credit-card rules, the fuel policy (full-to-full is usually easiest), and what insurance is actually included. For most visitors, picking up at Cairo International Airport (CAI) is the simplest start, while downtown locations may offer easier access if you’re already staying in the city and want to avoid airport traffic and timing constraints.

Cairo International Airport (CAI) – Arrivals Terminals (T2/T3 Primary)
Most international arrivals flow through Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Car rental counters are typically located in the arrivals/public area or nearby service desks, with vehicles parked in airport lots. Follow airport signs for 'Car Rental' after customs. Advantages: easiest pickup after landing, longer operating hours, better availability for late arrivals. Disadvantages: airport surcharges may apply, and leaving the airport puts you into heavy traffic quickly—plan extra time.
Downtown Cairo (Tahrir Square / Qasr El Nil Area)
Pros: central for hotels and museums; convenient if you’re already in the city and want to start a day trip without returning to the airport. Cons: difficult parking, dense traffic, pickup may require navigating narrow streets and double-parked areas; allow buffer time for vehicle inspection and paperwork.
Zamalek (Gezira Island)
Pros: popular upscale neighborhood with many hotels and embassies; often calmer than central downtown streets. Cons: island bridges can bottleneck during rush hour; parking is limited and may be restricted near diplomatic zones.

What do you need to rent a car in Cairo?

Renting a car in Cairo is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.

  • Form of ID: A valid physical national photo ID (Italy or Egypt) is required.
  • Driving licence: A full physical national driving licence with no major endorsements is required. The licence must generally be held for at least 1 year; some vehicles may require 2–5 years.

Notes: If the licence is not in clear Latin characters, an International Driving Permit (IDP) and/or certified translation may be required at the counter. For some Egypt rentals, Egyptians residing abroad booking certain car groups with tourist plates must provide a non‑Egyptian passport or valid residence outside Egypt.

  • Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Accepted credit cards commonly include Visa and MasterCard, and in many offers also American Express, Diners Club, JCB and Discover. Some rentals allow debit cards (mainly Visa/MasterCard, sometimes UnionPay and others) for payment or deposit. A second credit card may be required in specific offers. E‑voucher or printed voucher may be requested at the counter for some rentals.
  • Age requirements: Most offers allow driving roughly between 18–21 (minimum) and 64–90 (maximum), depending on supplier and car group. Some offers require a minimum age of 23–30 or cap the maximum at 64–75. Young driver surcharges commonly apply approximately from 18/19/20/21 up to 23–25, charged per day with possible caps (for example about 11–36.6 EUR or in some cases USD per day, with total caps for the rental on some tariffs). Senior driver surcharges may apply from about 70/71/75 up to 80–85 in certain offers, also charged per day. Where specified, the exact fee, age range, currency, tax inclusion and any maximum total charge follow the local supplier’s conditions at the counter.
  • Driving licence: A full physical driving licence with no major endorsements is required. The licence must generally be held for at least 1 year; some offers require 2–5 years. Accepted driving licence include:
    • Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP) (IDP is a translation only; original licence must also be shown; no copies accepted) or
    • EU/EEA Driving License (valid across the EU/EEA, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom) or
    • Original Driver's License in Latin/Roman alphabet (no IDP needed; if in a non‑Roman alphabet, an IDP and/or translation is required) or
    • Original South Korea Driving License (English version with English translation on the back, where applicable).

Notes: If the licence text or numerals are not in clear Latin characters, an IDP and possibly a certified translation are required, presented together with the original licence. In some cases, driver’s license, passport, and IDP must be issued in the same country.

  • Form of ID: A valid physical passport is required.
  • Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Commonly accepted cards include Visa and MasterCard, and in many offers also American Express, Diners Club, JCB, Discover, and sometimes UnionPay debit for payment or deposit. Some rentals accept debit cards (mainly Visa/MasterCard and occasionally others). A second credit card may be required in specific offers. An E‑voucher or printed voucher is required for some offers, and proof of Collision/Theft and/or Third‑Party Liability coverage from your card issuer or insurer may be requested in a few cases.
  • Age requirements: Most offers allow driving roughly between 18–21 (minimum) and 64–90 (maximum), depending on supplier and car group. Some offers require a minimum age of 23–30 or cap the maximum at 64–75. Why Pick Up At Cairo International Airport (CAI)

Airport pickup is often the most convenient option for travelers landing in Cairo, especially with luggage or late-night arrivals. You’ll typically find more availability across vehicle categories, clearer wayfinding, and extended operating hours. The trade-off can be added airport fees and the challenge of driving straight into busy traffic—consider picking up only if you’re heading out of the city soon or you’re comfortable driving in dense urban conditions.

Cairo Car Rental Guide

Essential driving tips and FAQ for self-drive travelers in Cairo, Egypt

Can I drive in Cairo with my US driver's license, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
You need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your valid US license. The IDP serves as a certified translation and is legally required when renting a car in Egypt. You can obtain an IDP through AAA before departure (about $20). Without it, rental companies will refuse to hand over the vehicle, and local police may issue fines. Get your IDP before arriving in Cairo.
How bad is Cairo traffic, and what should I know about driving in the city?
Cairo traffic is among the world's most chaotic. Expect aggressive lane-cutting, limited signaling, and frequent near-misses. Traffic laws are loosely enforced. During rush hour (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM), simple trips can take 2-3 times longer. Consider hiring a local driver for your first few days, or use major highways like the Cairo-Alex Desert Road for intercity travel. Keep both hands on the wheel—carjackings, though rare, do occur.
Are there toll roads in Egypt, and how do I pay for them?
Yes, toll roads include the Cairo-Alex Desert Road (about 50 EGP / ~$1.60) and the 6th October Bridge in Cairo. Most tolls accept cash only in Egyptian pounds. Electronic tags (Fasah) exist but are unreliable for short-term rentals. Budget around 100-200 EGP ($3-6) daily for tolls if exploring beyond Cairo. Always carry small denomination Egyptian pound notes for toll booths.
What's the young driver surcharge for renting a car in Egypt, and is it worth paying?
Drivers under 25 typically pay a young driver surcharge of 50-100 EGP ($1.60-3.20) per day, on top of the base rental rate. Some agencies also charge an extra 100 USD deposit for drivers under 25. If you're 21-24, this surcharge applies at virtually every rental company in Cairo. Before paying, compare quotes: the surcharge alone can add $40-80 to a week-long rental, so shop agencies that offer the lowest young driver fees.
What type of fuel do Egyptian cars use, and will I have trouble finding gas stations?
Egypt uses unleaded gasoline (95 octane) and diesel. Gas stations are plentiful along major highways and in cities, but credit cards are often not accepted—carry cash (Egyptian pounds). Most rental cars in Egypt run on gasoline. The full-to-full fuel policy is standard: you receive the car with a full tank and must return it full. Refuel near the airport before returning to avoid refueling service charges that can run 2-3x pump prices.
Is it safe to drive in Egypt during summer, and what weather hazards should I expect?
Summer (June-August) brings extreme heat (35-45°C / 95-113°F) that causes road surface softening and tire blowouts on highways. Sandstorms can reduce visibility to near zero, particularly in March-April. If driving to the Red Sea or Sinai, do so early morning or after sunset. Always carry 2+ liters of water per person, a phone charger, and ensure your rental has working air conditioning. Winter nights (December-February) can bring fog on desert roads—use low beams, not high beams.
