Compare airport and downtown pickup options, understand insurance and fuel rules, and choose the best location for your itinerary—without overpaying or getting surprised by fees.

What do you need to rent a car in Cairo?
Renting a car in Cairo is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.
- Form of ID: A valid physical national photo ID (Italy or Egypt) is required.
- Driving licence: A full physical national driving licence with no major endorsements is required. The licence must generally be held for at least 1 year; some vehicles may require 2–5 years.
Notes: If the licence is not in clear Latin characters, an International Driving Permit (IDP) and/or certified translation may be required at the counter. For some Egypt rentals, Egyptians residing abroad booking certain car groups with tourist plates must provide a non‑Egyptian passport or valid residence outside Egypt.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Accepted credit cards commonly include Visa and MasterCard, and in many offers also American Express, Diners Club, JCB and Discover. Some rentals allow debit cards (mainly Visa/MasterCard, sometimes UnionPay and others) for payment or deposit. A second credit card may be required in specific offers. E‑voucher or printed voucher may be requested at the counter for some rentals.
- Age requirements: Most offers allow driving roughly between 18–21 (minimum) and 64–90 (maximum), depending on supplier and car group. Some offers require a minimum age of 23–30 or cap the maximum at 64–75. Young driver surcharges commonly apply approximately from 18/19/20/21 up to 23–25, charged per day with possible caps (for example about 11–36.6 EUR or in some cases USD per day, with total caps for the rental on some tariffs). Senior driver surcharges may apply from about 70/71/75 up to 80–85 in certain offers, also charged per day. Where specified, the exact fee, age range, currency, tax inclusion and any maximum total charge follow the local supplier’s conditions at the counter.
- Driving licence: A full physical driving licence with no major endorsements is required. The licence must generally be held for at least 1 year; some offers require 2–5 years. Accepted driving licence include:
• Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP) (IDP is a translation only; original licence must also be shown; no copies accepted) or
• EU/EEA Driving License (valid across the EU/EEA, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom) or
• Original Driver's License in Latin/Roman alphabet (no IDP needed; if in a non‑Roman alphabet, an IDP and/or translation is required) or
• Original South Korea Driving License (English version with English translation on the back, where applicable).Notes: If the licence text or numerals are not in clear Latin characters, an IDP and possibly a certified translation are required, presented together with the original licence. In some cases, driver’s license, passport, and IDP must be issued in the same country.
- Form of ID: A valid physical passport is required.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Commonly accepted cards include Visa and MasterCard, and in many offers also American Express, Diners Club, JCB, Discover, and sometimes UnionPay debit for payment or deposit. Some rentals accept debit cards (mainly Visa/MasterCard and occasionally others). A second credit card may be required in specific offers. An E‑voucher or printed voucher is required for some offers, and proof of Collision/Theft and/or Third‑Party Liability coverage from your card issuer or insurer may be requested in a few cases.
- Age requirements: Most offers allow driving roughly between 18–21 (minimum) and 64–90 (maximum), depending on supplier and car group. Why Pick Up At Cairo International Airport (CAI)
Airport pickup is often the most convenient option for travelers landing in Cairo, especially with luggage or late-night arrivals. You’ll typically find more availability across vehicle categories, clearer wayfinding, and extended operating hours. The trade-off can be added airport fees and the challenge of driving straight into busy traffic—consider picking up only if you’re heading out of the city soon or you’re comfortable driving in dense urban conditions.

Beat the heat and crowds by timing your visit early or late. Ideal for photos, panoramic viewpoints, and pairing with nearby museums or a casual meal in Giza.
Memphis & Saqqara Half-Day Archaeology Trip
Focus on Egypt’s early dynastic capital region: open-air ruins, statues, and the Step Pyramid complex. Roads are mostly easy; plan for walking on uneven surfaces at sites.

A quick Red Sea getaway from Cairo for swimming and beach clubs. Start early, pack water, and confirm day-use access policies for your chosen beach spot.

Car Rental Planning Tips for Cairo
Bring the right documents: Carry your passport, a valid driver’s license, and (if required by the rental company) an International Driving Permit. Keep digital backups, but expect checks to require originals.
Choose insurance deliberately: Cairo driving can be hectic. Consider adding CDW/LDW and a low-deductible option if available. Photograph the car (all sides, roof, wheels) before leaving the lot.
Time your departures to avoid peak traffic: Traffic builds quickly in the morning and late afternoon. For day trips, leaving around dawn often saves time and stress—especially for Giza and Alexandria runs.
Expect tolls and plan your route: Major intercity routes (like the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road) commonly include tolls. Keep small bills/appropriate payment methods and confirm your navigation app is set to avoid or include tolls as you prefer.
Refuel early and don’t run low on highways: Fuel stations are common in Greater Cairo, but spacing can vary on longer stretches. Top up before leaving the city and again before returning if you’re on a tight schedule.
Have a parking strategy: Popular areas (Giza, Downtown Cairo, Alexandria Corniche) can be challenging for parking. Use official lots where possible and budget extra time for walking from parking to entrances.
Use offline maps and a local SIM: Navigation is far easier with reliable data. Download offline maps for Cairo/Giza and your destination, and consider a local SIM/eSIM for consistent coverage.
Drive defensively and stay predictable: Lane discipline can be fluid and merging is assertive. Keep safe following distance, signal early, and avoid sudden moves. At night, be extra cautious around poorly lit segments and pedestrians.
