Popular Driving Routes And Trips From Beirut
Scenic Route Options:
Popular Day Trips By Car:
Byblos (Jbeil) Day Trip
Spend the day exploring the old souk, seaside cafés, the Crusader castle, and the ancient port. Easy drive from Beirut and great for history lovers and relaxed waterfront time.
Baalbek Temples & Bekaa Valley
Head east across the mountains to visit the monumental Roman temple complex in Baalbek. Pair it with a Bekaa Valley lunch stop; start early and plan for checkpoints and slower segments.
Beiteddine Palace & Deir el-Qamar
A rewarding Chouf Mountains day combining Ottoman-era architecture at Beiteddine Palace and the charming historic streets of Deir el-Qamar. Best enjoyed with a leisurely lunch in the hills.
Sidon (Saida) & Tyre (Sour) South Coast
Drive south for coastal history: Sidon’s sea castle and old souks, then continue to Tyre for archaeological sites and a long seaside promenade. Great for a full-day coastal itinerary.
Car Rental Planning Tips For Beirut
Confirm License Requirements Before You Fly: Bring your home driver’s license and passport. Some rental desks may request an International Driving Permit (IDP) depending on your issuing country—confirm with your rental company in writing.
Choose Insurance With Local Driving In Mind: Prioritize collision damage coverage and a clear deductible. Photograph the car (all sides, roof, wheels, under-bumper) at pickup and drop-off to avoid disputes.
Plan Fuel Stops, Especially For Mountain Drives: Fill up in Beirut or along major corridors before heading to higher elevations (Chouf, Cedars, Bekaa). Stations can be less frequent in mountain areas and late at night.
Use Offline Maps And Pin Key Stops: Download offline maps for Lebanon and save waypoints (parking lots, viewpoints, entrances). Cellular coverage is generally good near the coast but can vary in valleys and higher mountains.
Avoid Peak Beirut Traffic Windows: Depart early to reduce time lost in city congestion. Weekday rush hours can significantly extend the time to reach coastal highways and mountain routes.
Drive Defensively And Expect Mixed Road Behavior: Lane discipline and merging can be aggressive in dense areas. Keep extra following distance, watch for scooters, and be prepared for sudden stops near roundabouts and exits.
Know Your Parking Strategy: In busy neighborhoods, prefer paid lots/valet over street parking. In old towns (Byblos, Batroun, Sidon), park once and explore on foot to avoid narrow streets.
Check Weather And Road Conditions In Winter: Snow and fog can affect routes to Cedars and other high-elevation areas. Ask your rental company about tire condition and whether chains are available if you plan winter mountain driving.
