What do you need to rent a car in Venice?
Renting a car in Venice is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.
- Form of ID: A valid physical Italy national photo ID is required for all local renters.
- Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical Italian driving license with no major endorsements. In most cases it must have been held for at least 1 year; for some offers and higher‑class vehicles it must have been held for at least 2 years. All national driving licenses in the Roman alphabet or in English are accepted. Licenses not in the Roman alphabet or English must be accompanied by an official English translation or an International Driving Permit.
Notes: For some vehicle groups (e.g., Citroen DS7 CROSSBACK or similar, Nuova C5 X Hybrid or similar, Jeep Compass or similar, Audi Q5 or similar, Q5 S-Tronic or similar), your driving license and ID document must be issued by the same country.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required where credit cards are listed. Commonly accepted credit cards include Visa and MasterCard; some offers also accept AMEX, Diners Club, Discover and JCB. Some rentals additionally accept debit cards (often Visa, MasterCard, sometimes UnionPay and others) for payment or deposit; in other cases only credit cards are allowed and no debit cards are accepted.
- Age requirements: Most offers allow drivers roughly between 18–21 years minimum and 74–99 years maximum, depending on the specific rental. A typical common range is about 19–80. Young driver fees apply when the main or additional driver is below about 25 (exact ranges vary by offer, commonly 18–24 or 21–24). When a young driver fee applies, the charge per day follows the offer’s stated reference, for example: $14.00, $16.48, $17.49, $22.16, $23.33, $27.99, $29.93, $42.69 per day (or corresponding weekly/monthly caps where stated). Some offers also charge an additional fee for older drivers (e.g., from 75 or 76 years), using the reference provided in that offer.
- Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical driving license with no major endorsements. In most cases it must have been held for at least 1 year; for some offers it must have been held for at least 2 years. Accepted driving licence include:
• Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP). Please note the IDP is only a translation and must be presented together with the original licence; photocopies or scans are not accepted or
• EU/EEA driving license, which is valid for car rental across the EU/EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom or
• In some offers, a full driver's license issued in Italy.

Why Pick Up at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE)
Airport pickup is ideal if you’re landing and heading straight to the mainland or nearby cities. You’ll typically get the widest vehicle selection (including automatics and larger cars), longer service hours, and easier after-hours return options. It can also reduce backtracking if your first stop is outside Venice. Car Rental Planning Tips for Venice (Must-Know)
Pick up on the mainland, not on the islands: Venice’s historic center has no cars. For easiest access, collect your rental near Venezia Mestre or at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), then drive from there.
Plan parking before you arrive: Major destinations often have limited central parking. Pre-identify garages or park-and-walk lots—especially in Verona, Florence, and lake towns like Sirmione.
Avoid ZTL restricted zones (and unexpected fines): Many Italian cities use ZTL (limited traffic zones) monitored by cameras. Do not follow GPS into old towns unless you’re sure your route and parking are ZTL-compliant.
Know fuel rules and station types: Diesel is common and often cheaper than gasoline. Look for “self” vs “servito” pumps (served lanes cost more). Save receipts and double-check the fuel type before fueling.
Choose a smaller car for narrow roads and tight lots: Compact cars make mountain villages, lakeside towns, and city-edge garages much less stressful, while also improving fuel economy.
In mountain seasons, confirm winter equipment: If heading toward the Dolomites in colder months, ask about winter tires or chains. Weather can change quickly at elevation.
Drive early to beat traffic and crowds: Lake Garda and Dolomites routes get congested on weekends and holidays. An early start improves parking availability and reduces time lost in queues.
Inspect the car and document everything: Before leaving the lot, photograph all sides, wheels, and windshield, and confirm any pre-existing damage is listed on the contract to prevent disputes at return.
