Updated Traveler Guide
Venice Car Rental Guide: Where to Pick Up, What to Expect, and How to Save
Renting a car in Venice is most convenient for travelers who want to explore the Veneto region and beyond—think Verona, the Dolomites, Lake Garda, Treviso, Padua, and wine country—on their own schedule. Venice’s historic center is largely car-free and driving is not practical on the islands, so the smartest approach is to pick up a car right before you leave the lagoon area and return it as you arrive. Expect higher costs and slower driving if you try to keep a car while staying in the historic center due to limited access, restricted traffic zones (ZTL in many Italian cities), and expensive parking. Airport and Mestre pickups usually offer better inventory, longer hours, and easier road access than island-adjacent locations.

Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) Car Rental Center
Best for immediate access to major rental brands, longer opening hours, and quick highway links. Follow airport signs for 'Autonoleggi/Car Rental' after baggage claim; most desks are in the arrivals area with vehicles in the dedicated rental parking. Pros: widest vehicle selection and frequent promos. Cons: airport surcharges can apply, and peak-season queues are common.
Piazzale Roma (Venice City Edge) Car Rentals
Closest practical pickup point to the historic center (end of the road network). Pros: convenient if you’re staying in Venice and want to start a road trip without going to the airport. Cons: limited stock, tighter hours, heavy traffic, and higher stress; parking and access can be expensive and time-consuming.
Venezia Mestre (Mainland Venice) — Train Station/City Offices
A top choice for value and convenience: easy to reach by train/bus from Venice Santa Lucia, with faster road access and better parking options. Pros: often better pricing than island-edge locations and easier logistics for returns. Cons: you must transfer from the historic center to Mestre before pickup.

What do you need to rent a car in Venice?

Renting a car in Venice is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.

  • Form of ID: A valid physical Italy national photo ID is required for all local renters.
  • Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical Italian driving license with no major endorsements. In most cases it must have been held for at least 1 year; for some offers and higher‑class vehicles it must have been held for at least 2 years. All national driving licenses in the Roman alphabet or in English are accepted. Licenses not in the Roman alphabet or English must be accompanied by an official English translation or an International Driving Permit.

Notes: For some vehicle groups (e.g., Citroen DS7 CROSSBACK or similar, Nuova C5 X Hybrid or similar, Jeep Compass or similar, Audi Q5 or similar, Q5 S-Tronic or similar), your driving license and ID document must be issued by the same country.

  • Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required where credit cards are listed. Commonly accepted credit cards include Visa and MasterCard; some offers also accept AMEX, Diners Club, Discover and JCB. Some rentals additionally accept debit cards (often Visa, MasterCard, sometimes UnionPay and others) for payment or deposit; in other cases only credit cards are allowed and no debit cards are accepted.
  • Age requirements: Most offers allow drivers roughly between 18–21 years minimum and 74–99 years maximum, depending on the specific rental. A typical common range is about 19–80. Young driver fees apply when the main or additional driver is below about 25 (exact ranges vary by offer, commonly 18–24 or 21–24). When a young driver fee applies, the charge per day follows the offer’s stated reference, for example: $14.00, $16.48, $17.49, $22.16, $23.33, $27.99, $29.93, $42.69 per day (or corresponding weekly/monthly caps where stated). Some offers also charge an additional fee for older drivers (e.g., from 75 or 76 years), using the reference provided in that offer.
  • Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical driving license with no major endorsements. In most cases it must have been held for at least 1 year; for some offers it must have been held for at least 2 years. Accepted driving licence include:
    • Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP). Please note the IDP is only a translation and must be presented together with the original licence; photocopies or scans are not accepted or
    • EU/EEA driving license, which is valid for car rental across the EU/EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom or
    • In some offers, a full driver's license issued in Italy.
All national licenses in the Roman alphabet or in English are accepted; all others must be accompanied by an official English translation or an International Driving Permit.

Why Pick Up at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE)

Airport pickup is ideal if you’re landing and heading straight to the mainland or nearby cities. You’ll typically get the widest vehicle selection (including automatics and larger cars), longer service hours, and easier after-hours return options. It can also reduce backtracking if your first stop is outside Venice. Venice Car Rental & Driving Guide

Essential tips for renting and driving a car near Venice, Italy

Can I drive my rental car directly into Venice's historic center?
No—Venice's historic center is entirely car-free. All vehicles must stop at the mainland (Mestre) and park in garages like Parcheggio Tronchetto (€21/day) or Parcheggio San Marco (€25/day). From there, take a vaporetto (water bus) or water taxi into the city. Driving within Venice's ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) triggers automatic fines of €80-150. Your rental company will explain boundaries clearly—stay on the mainland.
Where should I park my rental car near Venice, and how much does it cost?
Park at Tronchetto (Island, €21/day) or Parcheggio Roma (Piazzale Roma, from €25/day). Both offer 24/7 access with shuttle services to Venice center. For cheaper options, park in Mestre (€8-12/day) and take the tram (10 min, €1.50). Never park on streets with blue lines without paying—local police fine foreigners heavily, and towing costs €200+.
How do I pay for Italian highway tolls? Do I need a Telepass device?
Italy uses a mix of cash and electronic tolling. The Venice-Trieste A4 highway costs roughly €10-15 from major cities. Look for 'Telepass' lanes (yellow signs)—rent a device from your rental company (€5-10/day) if you plan frequent highway use. Alternatively, use the 'Cart' lane and pay by card at exits. Avoid the 'Viacard' lanes unless you have the specific card. Cash lanes exist but get congested during peak season.
Do American tourists need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Italy?
Yes and no—the Italian police technically accept US licenses alone, but rental companies often require an IDP (International Driving Permit) as a translation document. Get one from AAA before departure ($20, same-day processing). Without it, some agencies may refuse pickup or your insurance could be voided. The IDP is valid for 1 year and translates your license into 10 languages. Carry both your US license and IDP.
I'm 22. Will I pay a young driver surcharge, and how much?
Yes—most Italian rental agencies charge a 'young driver fee' for drivers under 25, typically €20-35 per day on top of the base rate. Some luxury/sports cars require drivers to be 25+. This surcharge applies to the primary driver; additional drivers cost €10-15/day extra. Budget accordingly: a €50/day base rate becomes €70-85/day with the young driver surcharge. Under-21s face steep restrictions or are outright banned from most rental fleets.
What happens if I accidentally drive into a Venice ZTL zone?
You'll receive an automatic fine of €80-150 within 2-4 weeks by mail to your rental company's Italian address, which they pass on to you (plus a €30-50 administrative fee). Cameras at every ZTL entry point photograph plates and match them to rental records. Some rental companies also charge a 'ZTL processing fee' of €50-100. If you're caught, do not argue with police on-site—the fine is automatic. The only valid exceptions are hotel guests with special permits (check with your hotel first).
