What do you need to rent a car in Marrakech?
Renting a car in Marrakech is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.
- Form of ID: A valid physical Morocco national photo ID is required for the main driver and any additional drivers.
- Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical Moroccan driving license with no major endorsements. The license must generally have been held for at least 1–2 years; some offers require 2 years and a few up to 5 years. Longer holding periods may be required for certain car groups.
Notes: For most rentals a minimum holding period of 1 year applies, but some vehicles require 2 years and certain offers require 5 years. A full licence with no major endorsements is mandatory.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required at pickup. Accepted credit card brands (depending on the offer) include Visa, MasterCard, American Express, UnionPay, Diners Club, JCB, Discover. Some offers also accept debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, UnionPay, JCB) either for payment or deposit. Two cards are normally not required. Card type restrictions (e.g., XpCard/CtCard/DcCard/UnCard) may apply by offer.
- Age requirements: Most offers allow rentals for drivers roughly between 19–80 years, with typical ranges including 19–80, 21–75, 21–80, 21–99, 23–70, 23–80, and 25–75. Exact minimum and maximum ages depend on the specific car and supplier. Young driver surcharges often apply, commonly for ages 19–24/25, for example: about $5.94–$11.87 per day (in EUR), or around MAD 100–300 per day (about $11–$33), sometimes with a total cap for the rental (e.g., MAD 2900 or MAD 1200). Some offers also charge senior driver fees for older drivers (e.g., 65+ or 70+), in a similar range. Fees and age bands vary by supplier and must be checked for the chosen offer.

Car Rental Planning Tips for Marrakech
Bring the right documents: Carry your passport, driver’s license, and the credit card used for the deposit. An International Driving Permit can be helpful, especially if your license isn’t in Latin characters.
Choose the right vehicle for your route: A compact car is great for city driving and parking, but consider higher ground clearance for rural roads and mountain routes. For high passes, prioritize good tires and strong brakes.
Plan around daylight and road conditions: Mountain roads can be slow and winding, and visibility drops at night. Start early, build in photo stops, and check weather if you’re crossing Atlas passes.
Fuel up before long scenic stretches: Fill up in or near Marrakech before heading into the Atlas or toward remote viewpoints. Keep some cash on hand for smaller stations that may not accept cards.
Download offline maps and save key pins: Mobile signal can dip in valleys and mountain areas. Download offline maps, pin your riad/hotel, parking spots, and major junctions before you leave.
Use official parking and confirm access to your stay: Many riads are inside the medina where cars can’t enter. Ask your accommodation for the closest recommended parking area and the best drop-off point for luggage.
Inspect the car and document everything: Photograph the exterior, wheels, windshield, and interior at pickup and return. Confirm the fuel policy and note any existing scratches on the rental form.
Understand insurance, deposits, and toll expectations: Clarify what’s covered (collision, glass/tires, theft) and the deductible amount. Some routes use toll roads; keep small bills/coins available for quick payments.
