What do you need to rent a car in Mallorca?
Renting a car in Mallorca is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.
- Form of ID: A valid physical national photo ID is required (Chile renters in Chile; Spain renters in Spain).
- Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical national driving license with no major endorsements. The license must typically be held for at least 1–2 years; some offers require 2 years and a few require up to 4 years, where shorter holding periods may incur a new/young driver fee.
Notes: Some locations accept Spanish digital driving licenses via the official DGT App. In Spain, young drivers may be charged additional daily fees; some locations also apply a new driver fee if the license has been held for less than 4 years.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Accepted credit cards include Visa and Master, with many locations also accepting AMEX, Diners Club, Discover, JCB and in some cases UnionPay. Some stations also accept debit cards (usually Visa or Master) as deposit cards, subject to local conditions.
- Age requirements: Most offers allow driving between approximately 18–25 (minimum) and 70–99 (maximum), with the most common ranges being 21–80 or 21–75. Several offers restrict rentals to 25+ or 26+. Young driver surcharges commonly apply when the driver is between about 18–26 (or up to 25) and can range roughly from EUR 5–32 per day (or capped totals such as EUR 55–300), or around USD 10–20 per day in some locations. In a few offers, senior drivers (typically 75+ or 75–100) may also pay a daily fee. Notes indicate that luxury/premium vehicles can have stricter age limits and that some locations charge additional “new driver” fees when the license has been held for less than four years.
- Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical driving license with no major endorsements. The license must typically be held for at least 1–2 years; some offers require 2 years and a few require 4 years, while others accept any full license regardless of holding time. Accepted driving licence include:
• Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP)
• Original South Korea Driving License (English version with English translation on the back)
• EU/EEA Driving License (valid across the EU/EEA, Switzerland, and the UK)
• Full driver’s license issued in Spain
• Original driving licence + Spain sworn translation (where specified).Notes: IDP is only a translation and must be presented together with the original driving license; photocopies or scans are not accepted. Some Spanish locations accept Spanish digital licenses via the official DGT App for eligible foreign renters. Young and senior drivers may incur additional daily surcharges, and some locations apply a surcharge if the license has been held less than 4 years.
- Form of ID: A valid passport is required.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Commonly accepted schemes are Visa and Master; many locations also accept AMEX, Diners Club, Discover, JCB and UnionPay. Some offers additionally accept debit cards (usually Visa or Master, sometimes UnionPay) as deposit cards. In a few cases, proof of Collision/Theft and Third Party Liability coverage from a card issuer or insurer must be provided in printed form.
- Age requirements: Most offers allow driving between approximately 18–25 (minimum) and 70–99 (maximum), with the most common ranges being 21–80 or 21–75. Popular Driving Routes And Trips From Mallorca, Spain
Scenic Route Options:
Popular Day Trips By Car:
Alcúdia Old Town & Beach Day (Alcúdia + Playa de Muro)
Combine medieval walls and market streets in Alcúdia with a long, sandy beach afternoon at Playa de Muro. Great for families and travelers who want an easy, low-stress driving day.
Sóller Valley & Port Sunset (Sóller + Port de Sóller)
Spend the day in the orange-scented Sóller valley, then head to Port de Sóller for a seaside walk and sunset dinner. A top choice for a scenic but not overly long drive.
Caves & Coast (Porto Cristo + Cuevas del Drach)
Drive to Porto Cristo to visit the Cuevas del Drach (famous for its underground lake) and then relax by the harbor or nearby beaches. Book cave entry in advance in peak season to avoid long waits.
Cap de Formentor Sunrise or Golden Hour (Formentor Peninsula)
Go early for lighter traffic and the best light over cliffs and sea. Stop at Mirador Es Colomer and finish at the lighthouse. Pack water and check seasonal road restrictions before you go.
Mallorca Car Rental Planning Tips
Bring The Right Documents: Carry your driver’s license and passport/ID. If your license is non-EU, consider an International Driving Permit as a backup—some rental desks may request it.
Understand Insurance Before You Pay: Confirm what’s included (CDW, theft, glass/tires/undercarriage) and whether there’s an excess. Take photos/video of the car at pickup and drop-off.
Expect Narrow Roads In The Tramuntana: Plan extra time for tight corners, stone walls, cyclists, and limited passing points. Choose a smaller car if you’ll spend multiple days in mountain villages.
Fuel Strategy: Know Your Policy: Prefer “full-to-full” to avoid inflated fuel fees. Keep the final receipt when refueling near the airport and check station hours if returning late.
Parking Is The Real Challenge In Summer: Arrive early at popular calas and towns, and use public lots where available. In historic centers, look for marked zones and avoid restricted access streets.
Drive Timing Matters: Start early for Formentor and top beaches to beat traffic and secure parking. Midday drives are slower in peak season due to congestion and heat.
Use Offline Maps For Remote Areas: Cell coverage can dip on mountain roads and some coves. Download offline maps and save key pins for viewpoints, parking lots, and beach trailheads.
