Car Rental Planning Tips for Driving Around Kigali
Carry the right documents: Bring your driver’s license, passport/ID, and rental agreement at all times. If you have an International Driving Permit, carry it too—some agencies and checkpoints may request it.
Plan for hilly roads and variable speeds: Kigali and much of Rwanda are mountainous. Expect slower average speeds than the map suggests, especially on winding sections and when it rains.
Fuel up before long stretches: Fuel stations are common in Kigali and major towns, but can be sparse near parks and rural corridors. Top up in Kigali, Rwamagana/Kayonza (Akagera route), or Musanze (Volcanoes route).
Watch weather and visibility: Rain and fog can reduce visibility in the highlands (north and southwest). Leave extra braking distance and avoid rushing after dark on unfamiliar roads.
Start early for parks and day trips: For Akagera or Volcanoes-area activities, early departure helps you beat traffic, arrive for briefing times, and maximize wildlife viewing during cooler hours.
Choose the right vehicle type: A small sedan works for most paved routes. For Nyungwe-area side roads, rainy seasons, or deeper park drives, consider higher clearance or 4x4 depending on your itinerary.
Confirm insurance and roadside support: Ask what’s included (CDW, theft coverage, glass/tires) and save the 24/7 assistance number. Photograph the car at pickup (all sides, tires, windshield) to avoid disputes.
Use offline navigation and local landmarks: Download offline maps before leaving Kigali. In rural areas, combining GPS with well-known landmarks (district towns, park gates) reduces wrong turns.
