What do you need to rent a car in Dubai?
Renting a car in Dubai is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.
- Form of ID: A valid physical national photo ID (e.g., Philippines or United Arab Emirates) must be presented together with a valid passport or resident ID if required by local law.
- Driving licence: Main and additional drivers must present a full physical national driving licence with no major endorsements. The licence must generally have been held for at least 1 year; some vehicles or offers may require up to 2 years. Original GCC licences are accepted where applicable and must be within their validity period.
Notes: When using a GCC driver’s license, all original documents (ID, passport, resident ID) must be valid within their expiration period. Some companies accept specific national licences (e.g., GCC and selected countries) without an IDP and may charge parking/handling fees for missed airport pickups.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required for deposit and rental charges. Accepted credit cards may include Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, UnionPay, JCB, Discover and others depending on the offer. Some offers also accept deposit/credit UnionPay cards or designated charge cards; debit cards may be accepted in limited cases. Two cards are generally not required unless specified.
- Age requirements: Most offers require drivers to be between 21 and 75 years old, with some ranges extending from 18 up to 99 or 100, or capping at 65–80 depending on vehicle and supplier. Young driver surcharges may apply, typically for ages 18–20 or 21–24, for example around $10 USD per day or about 50 AED per day (with possible total caps such as 500 AED). In some offers, young-driver and older-driver fees are marked “To be confirmed.” Certain products restrict rentals to 24+ or 25+ only. Always check the specific age range and any young/old driver fee shown for your selected vehicle.
- Driving licence: Main and additional drivers must present a full physical driving licence with no major endorsements, generally held for at least 1 year; some offers require up to 2 years. Accepted driving licence include:
• Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP) (IDP is a translation only; photocopies or scans are not accepted) or
• Original South Korea Driving License (English version, with English translation on the back) or
• GCC Driving License (for eligible renters, subject to supplier rules) or
• Original US Driver’s License or
• Original Canada Driving Licence or
• EU/EEA Driving License (valid across EU/EEA, Switzerland, UK) or
• Other specified national licences (e.g., from listed countries such as Albania, Australia, China with official translation, etc.) where explicitly accepted without IDP.Notes: Original physical documents are mandatory; photocopies or scanned copies are not accepted. For GCC licences, the renter must meet citizenship/eligibility rules and present all documents within their validity period. Some suppliers list specific countries whose national licences are accepted without an IDP.
- Form of ID: A valid passport must be presented at the rental counter. Where applicable, a valid visa or resident ID may also be required and must be within its validity period.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required. Depending on the offer, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, UnionPay, JCB and Discover may be accepted. Certain offers also support specific corporate/charge cards or UnionPay cards, and in some cases deposit-capable debit cards (Visa/MasterCard etc.). Cards must be physically presented; virtual or photocopied cards are not accepted.
Why Choose DXB Airport Pickup
Picking up at Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the most convenient option for most travelers—especially after long flights or late arrivals. You’ll typically find the broadest fleet selection (economy to SUV), longer service hours, and straightforward access to major highways for quick exits toward Downtown, Marina, or neighboring Emirates. It’s also ideal if you want to start driving immediately rather than paying for taxis/ride-hailing first.

Popular Routes And Road Trips From Dubai
Best Scenic Drives And City-to-Desert Routes:
Popular Day Trips From Dubai:

An easy, highway-friendly day trip for culture and architecture. Combine the Grand Mosque with a Corniche stroll and optional stops like Louvre Abu Dhabi or Qasr Al Watan depending on timing.

A short drive to a deeper look at Emirati history and museums. Ideal for travelers who want souks, galleries, and waterfront walks without spending all day on the road.
Al Ain Oasis And Jebel Hafeet Scenic Drive
A longer but rewarding trip featuring a UNESCO-listed oasis, forts, and a dramatic mountain road up Jebel Hafeet for panoramic desert views—especially good near sunset.
Fujairah And East Coast Beaches (via Masafi)

Car Rental Planning Tips For Dubai Road Trips
Confirm License Rules Before You Pick Up: Bring your original driver’s license and passport. Many travelers also need an International Driving Permit (IDP) depending on issuing country—confirm requirements with the rental company in advance.
Plan Around Salik Toll Gates: Dubai’s Salik is automatic. Most rentals bill tolls later (often with an admin fee), so budget for tolls if you’ll drive Sheikh Zayed Road, cross key bridges, or do multiple city loops.
Fuel Up Early For Desert And Mountain Drives: In the city, fuel stations are frequent and often offer attendant service. For routes to Hatta, Al Ain, or the east coast, top up before leaving urban areas and keep an eye on range.
Choose Insurance That Matches Your Route: If you’re doing lots of highway driving or visiting busy tourist areas, consider collision damage coverage and a windshield/tire add-on where available. Always photograph the car at pickup and return.
Know Parking Rules And Paid Zones: Downtown, Marina, and beach areas often have paid parking. Use official meters/apps where applicable, avoid blocking driveways, and watch for restricted hotel/resident-only areas.
Avoid Peak Traffic Windows: Weekday rush hours can heavily affect travel times. Start earlier for long day trips (Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Fujairah) and aim to return after peak evening traffic when possible.
Heat And Hydration Matter: In warmer months, carry water, keep a phone charger in the car, and don’t plan long outdoor stops midday. If your route includes hikes or viewpoints, go early or near sunset.
Use Offline Maps For Remote Areas: Signal is generally strong on highways, but coverage can vary near mountain roads. Download offline maps, save key stops, and share your itinerary if driving outside the city.
