Rent a Car in Belgrade, Serbia — Competitive Prices and a Practical Local Guide

Compare airport and downtown pickup options, understand insurance and fees, and choose the right car for Belgrade city driving or road trips across Serbia.

Updated Traveler Guide
Belgrade Car Rental Guide: Where to Pick Up and What to Expect
Renting a car in Belgrade is convenient if you plan day trips (Novi Sad, Fruška Gora, Avala), cross-country routes, or prefer door-to-door flexibility beyond public transit. City driving can be busy and parking can be limited in central areas, so many travelers pick up a car after arriving or choose an airport pickup for immediate highway access. Expect manual transmissions to be more common than automatics, deposits to be required on a credit card, and insurance choices (CDW/TP/third-party liability) to materially change your total cost. If you’ll stay mostly in the city center, downtown pickup can reduce parking hassle; for longer itineraries, BEG airport pickup often provides the broadest fleet and longest operating hours.

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) — Car Rental Area
Belgrade’s main international airport. Most major and local rental providers have service desks in or near the terminal with cars parked in designated airport lots/garages. Pros: widest vehicle selection (including SUVs and automatics), longer hours, easy access to E-75/E-70 for onward travel. Cons: airport surcharges may apply, queues at peak arrival times, and you may pay for parking if you return early and wait in the terminal.
Belgrade City Center (Stari Grad / Terazije Area)
Pros: convenient if you’re staying centrally and only need a car for a portion of your trip; easier to start after sightseeing. Cons: limited parking, heavier traffic, and some streets can be narrow or one-way; pickup/return can be slower during rush hour.
New Belgrade (Novi Beograd) Business District
Pros: typically easier driving and parking than the old town, quicker access to highways and bridges, and often more spacious offices/parking lots. Cons: less walkable from historic attractions, and you may need a taxi/transit to reach the branch depending on your hotel location.

What do you need to rent a car in Belgrade?

Renting a car in Belgrade is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.

  • Form of ID: A valid physical Serbia national photo ID must be presented at the counter.
  • Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical Serbian driving licence with no major endorsements. The licence must have been held for at least 1–2 years (most offers require a minimum of 2 years; some allow 1 year).

Notes: Some cars require at least 1 year of holding a valid driver’s license, others 2 years. One supplier explicitly requires 2 years’ holding time.

  • Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Visa and Master are accepted on all offers; AMEX and sometimes Diners Club are also accepted on many. Some offers additionally accept deposit cards (Visa, Master, AMEX) and/or cash for payment, but a credit card may still be required for the deposit. Debit cards are accepted only by a few offers and only if branded Visa/Master/AMEX as stated.
  • Age requirements: Most offers allow rentals between about 18–25 (minimum) and 65–99 (maximum), with common ranges being 21–75 or 21–80. Some offers require drivers to be at least 23 or 25. Young driver surcharges may apply within the listed bands, for example: 18–21: about €3.49 per day; 18–25: about €13.96 per day; 21–24: about €15.94 per day; 21–24: about €23.26 per day (capped around €232.60 per rental); 23–25: about €11.63 per day (with a possible total cap). In a few offers, flat ‘per lease’ fees apply (around the equivalent of $41.87) for younger or older drivers (e.g., over 70 or 71). Exact applicable ages and fees depend on the chosen car and supplier.
  • Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical driving licence with no major endorsements. The licence must generally have been held for at least 1–2 years (most offers require 2 years; some allow 1 year). Accepted driving licence include:
    • Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP) (IDP is a translation only; original licence must also be shown; photocopies or scans are not accepted) or
    • Original South Korea Driving License (English version) with an English translation provided on the back (only available in some offers).
  • Form of ID: A valid passport must be presented at the counter.
  • Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required in almost all cases. Visa and Master are accepted across all offers; AMEX is widely accepted and Diners Club in some offers. A few offers also accept deposit cards (Visa, Master, AMEX) and/or cash for payment, but a credit card is typically still needed for the security deposit. Debit cards (Visa/Master/AMEX) are accepted only by certain offers when specified.
  • Age requirements: Most offers allow rentals between about 18–25 (minimum) and 65–99 (maximum), with common ranges being 21–75 or 21–80. Some offers require drivers to be at least 23 or 25. Belgrade Car Rental Guide

Essential tips for US travelers renting cars and driving in Belgrade, Serbia

Can I use my US driver's license in Belgrade, or do I need an International Driving Permit?
US citizens can use their US driver's license in Serbia for up to 6 months, but an International Driving Permit (IDP) is STRONGLY recommended. The IDP acts as an official translation recognized by police and rental companies. Without it, you risk fines of 5,000-20,000 RSD ($50-200) if stopped. Get one from AAA before departure ($20, valid 1 year). Budget 5 minutes at the rental counter if you have an IDP versus potential 30+ minute verification delays without one.
How much does it cost to drive on Serbian highways, and how do I pay tolls?
Serbia uses a ticket-based toll system—NOT electronic tags. You'll grab a ticket at highway entrances and pay at exits using cash (RSD or EUR) or cards. Sample costs: Belgrade to Novi Sad (80km) costs ~650 RSD (~$6); Belgrade to Niš (230km) runs ~1,500 RSD (~$14). Avoid toll plazas during peak hours (7-9am, 4-7pm) as lines can stretch 15+ minutes. Credit cards work at most toll stations, but cash is faster.
I'm 22. Can I rent a car in Serbia, and what will I pay in young driver fees?
Yes, most agencies rent to drivers 21+, but expect to pay a "young driver surcharge" of €5-15/day (roughly $5-16). Drivers under 21 face much higher fees (€20-30/day) or outright refusal at cheaper rental chains. At 22, you'll pay around €8-12/day extra with major companies like Avis, Budget, or Sixt. Under-25 drivers also face restrictions on certain vehicle categories (luxury cars, 9-passenger vans almost always prohibited). Book early—under-25 inventory is limited.
Do I need winter tires in Belgrade? When are snow chains necessary?
From November 15 to April 1, winter tires are MANDATORY on all tires (minimum 4mm tread depth). Fines for non-compliance range from 6,000-20,000 RSD ($60-200). Snow chains must be carried in your vehicle from November 1 to March 31 in mountain areas. If driving to ski resorts like Kopaonik (3-4 hours from Belgrade), expect icy mountain roads with limited salting. If visiting December-February, ALWAYS reserve a 4WD or at least a compact SUV—FWD sedans struggle on mountain passes and rental agencies frequently run out of 4WDs in peak ski season.
Is parking in Belgrade city center expensive and safe?
Belgrade has three parking zones: red (most expensive, ~180 RSD/hour ~$1.70), yellow (~120 RSD/hour), and green (~90 RSD/hour). The city center around Kneza Mihaila Street has meters requiring the mpark app or sms payment. Parking garages cost 200-400 RSD/hour but offer security. On-street parking in summer can mean 20-30 minute searches during peak hours. DO NOT leave valuables visible in cars—break-ins in parking lots happen, especially at tourist sites. Blue zone hours typically 7am-10pm Monday-Saturday, free on Sundays.
What's the real cost of fuel in Serbia, and which gas stations should I use?
As of 2026, diesel costs ~195 RSD/liter (~$1.80/gallon) and petrol ~210 RSD/liter (~$1.95/gallon)—significantly cheaper than the US. The "full-to-full" policy is standard: you receive the car full and return it full. Major chains: NIS Petrol, OMV, Lukoil, and Euro Gas. Most accept credit cards at the pump. Unleaded 95 and diesel are universally available; premium fuels exist but aren't necessary for rental cars. If crossing borders to Montenegro or Bosnia, fill up in Serbia—fuel is 30-40% cheaper here.
