What do you need to rent a car in Belgrade?
Renting a car in Belgrade is quite convenient, but there can be some specific requirements, especially for foreign renters.
- Form of ID: A valid physical Serbia national photo ID must be presented at the counter.
- Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical Serbian driving licence with no major endorsements. The licence must have been held for at least 1–2 years (most offers require a minimum of 2 years; some allow 1 year).
Notes: Some cars require at least 1 year of holding a valid driver’s license, others 2 years. One supplier explicitly requires 2 years’ holding time.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are generally required. Visa and Master are accepted on all offers; AMEX and sometimes Diners Club are also accepted on many. Some offers additionally accept deposit cards (Visa, Master, AMEX) and/or cash for payment, but a credit card may still be required for the deposit. Debit cards are accepted only by a few offers and only if branded Visa/Master/AMEX as stated.
- Age requirements: Most offers allow rentals between about 18–25 (minimum) and 65–99 (maximum), with common ranges being 21–75 or 21–80. Some offers require drivers to be at least 23 or 25. Young driver surcharges may apply within the listed bands, for example: 18–21: about €3.49 per day; 18–25: about €13.96 per day; 21–24: about €15.94 per day; 21–24: about €23.26 per day (capped around €232.60 per rental); 23–25: about €11.63 per day (with a possible total cap). In a few offers, flat ‘per lease’ fees apply (around the equivalent of $41.87) for younger or older drivers (e.g., over 70 or 71). Exact applicable ages and fees depend on the chosen car and supplier.
- Driving licence: The main and any additional drivers must present a full physical driving licence with no major endorsements. The licence must generally have been held for at least 1–2 years (most offers require 2 years; some allow 1 year). Accepted driving licence include:
• Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP) (IDP is a translation only; original licence must also be shown; photocopies or scans are not accepted) or
• Original South Korea Driving License (English version) with an English translation provided on the back (only available in some offers). - Form of ID: A valid passport must be presented at the counter.
- Accepted cards: Physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver are required in almost all cases. Visa and Master are accepted across all offers; AMEX is widely accepted and Diners Club in some offers. A few offers also accept deposit cards (Visa, Master, AMEX) and/or cash for payment, but a credit card is typically still needed for the security deposit. Debit cards (Visa/Master/AMEX) are accepted only by certain offers when specified.

Car Rental Planning Tips For Belgrade Drivers
Bring the right documents: Carry your driver’s license, passport/ID, and a credit card in the main driver’s name. Many agencies require a deposit on a credit card (not a debit card).
Choose the right car for Serbian roads: For cities and highways, a compact car is easiest for parking and tolls. For rural viewpoints and park areas, prioritize ground clearance and good tires, especially outside summer.
Understand tolls and where you’ll pay: Major highways use toll booths; keep cash (RSD) or a card handy. Build a small buffer into your schedule for toll lines during weekend peaks.
Plan fuel stops on long Danube drives: Fuel stations are common around Belgrade and on main corridors, but can be less frequent on scenic stretches near the Danube gorge. Refill before heading deeper into Đerdap and keep an eye on range.
Use offline maps and confirm destination names: Download offline maps for rural areas and search by Serbian place names (e.g., Đerdap, Golubac). Double-check that you’re navigating to the correct fortress/park entrance.
Expect paid parking and limited curb space in Belgrade: Central areas have zoned parking and enforcement. Use garages or marked lots when possible and confirm your hotel has parking before you arrive.
Review insurance and damage rules before you leave the lot: Ask what’s covered (CDW, theft, glass/tires) and photograph the car (wheels, bumpers, windshield) at pickup and return. Clarify the fuel policy and after-hours fees.
