Akaroa – the most French town in New Zealand

Akaroa is a small town on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand, situated within a harbour of the same name. Akaroa is a beautiful harbour-side town with charming colonial architecture remnant of the French and British settlers who founded the area.

Drive across Gebbies Pass to join the main road out to Akaroa which passes Lake Ellesmere which is full of many different bird species. And just past the lake you’ll see the turn off for Birdlings Flat. The beach and ocean is just a minutes drive from the main road.

🚘The town is 84 kilometres by road from Christchurch and is the terminus of State Highway 75. The drive is scenic and easy on a one lane each way country road that winds through the mountains.
