Driver's License Requirements

The main driver and any additional drivers will need to provide a physical full driver's license in their name with no major endorsements. The license should be held for at least 1-2 year(s).

Sri Lankan Temporary Driving Permit

If you only have the local license from the country of your domicile, the car dealer can accompany you to go to DMT (Department of Motor Traffic) to obtain a Temporary Driving Permit. The cost is about 50 EUR and it's subject to the local charge standard.(Please note this process will take a couple of hours and the DMT office is open only on Mon - Fri from 8.30 am till 3.30 pm.)

Original Driver's License + International Driving Permit

Please note that the IDP(International Driving Permit) is only a translation and you must bring your original driver’s license with you.

    I had contacted Europcar prior to my arrival and they had assured that the process will be smooth. Their representative Mr. Nilantha was supportive during the handover and takeover process which went smooth. Sri Lanka is currently facing an issue with fuel and i suggest customers to plan their trips accordingly.

    Booked car was compact class (Toyota Aqua), but was given car from class mini (Perodua Bezza). And the staff of rental told us that it's better car. It was a blatant lie! So we paid more for worse car! It was disgusting! Rental is fully scammers. The car was in terrible condition: big dents, tire tread completely erased, dirt in the car, car suspention problems... They use the fact that you have nowhere to go because you need a car and pretend they don’t understand your English. If you book their car, be careful, insist on your own and check everything very carefully. Finally I have to say that it is not a real Europcar, all cars are given from local rental SR rent a car. So be very careful booking car in this area.
